Many Linux distributions offer websites to search for applications. You can see which version of each software package is included in what distribution and download it directly from the website.

The Ubuntu package database can be searched at http://packages.ubuntu.com

For the Debian search please see http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

For Fedora you can find the website at https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb
